Background informations about 'Fushikaden'
"'Fushikaden' began life as a series that intermittently appeared between 1975 to 1977 in the magazine Camera Mainichi. Issei SUDA later combined those photographs with other unpublished work and published that together in the '1979 book'. 'Fushi Kaden' (1978) borrows its title (in translation: 'Transmission of the Flower of the Art') from one of the classic 15th Century works on the Japanese Noh Theatre, which, though written largely to preserve the teaching about the Noh is now read mainly as a philosophical work. The artist must strive for perfection, the 'flower' of total beauty, whether in dance or with a camera." (kowasa)
Content
This new publication of 'Fushikaden' is not simply a reprinting of the original, but adds in 38 photos not included in the earlier book, and Issei SUDA himself in the book's afterword considers the new book as 'the complete edition'. 8...) This numbered edition, ltd. to 500 copies - each of which is signed by SUDA - has been released on the occasion of the two-part Fall 2012 exhibition of the work in Tokyo." (text: japan exposures)
