Statement of the photographer, Koji ONAKA.
"I had traveled to Sanriku in December 1997. After publishing the volume 'Distance' the previous year, I had fallen into a crisis, so I used a zoom lens from 28 mm to 200 mm. After I returned to Tokyo, I sold the lens and never printed any of the photos. The city was almost completely destroyed by the tsunami last year. I hope these photos can be useful in some way." Background information
"The small photo book 'Unimachi 1997' was created in 2012 under the impression of the devastating tsunami in Japan. A small drawing at the beginning of the book situates the B&W images of everyday life in the cities at that time contained in the volume in the region marked by the devastation. The series was published again in a book of photographs at a later date.
Content
Long out of print, Koji ONAKA's photography volume 'Umimachi' contains full-page B&W shots of everyday urban life. At the end of the volume, Koji ONAKA's statement on the motives of the publication is reproduced in English and in Japanese.
