Background information, content
Self-published and handmade, 'Land of the Setting Sun' is a quiet work that could easily be underestimated at first. Born in Tohoku, in northern Japan, and now living in the Netherlands, the photographer is intensely concerned with her surroundings, which she sees through the eyes of a Japanese woman, whose roots also show in the photographs.
'Land of Setting Sun' was born out of the intense experience of the tsunami in her homeland, which she deals with in her latest series. Her self-published publication, limited to 100 copies, is printed on newsprint; the A4 pages can be unfolded to reveal OKUYAMA's cosmos.
