Background information
"This photo book, 'Puglia. Tra Albe e Tramonti', with works by Italian photographer Luigi GHIRRI offers a glimpse into his relationship with the region of Puglia at the foot of Italy, which was crucial to his career and continued to inspire him throughout his career. On a first visit in 1982, Luigi GHIRRI became acquainted with the whitewashed streets of Puglia, the luminous nights, the archways, the cacti, the fairs and the beaches, but also with a group of artists, critics and curators who became his close friends and collaborators. For the next ten years, he returned to this region almost annually, photographing, exhibiting, and deepening his understanding of the subtle terrain.
Content
The color photographs by Luigi GHIRRI in the photographic volume 'Puglia. Tra Albe e Tramonti' - almost all little known and previously unpublished - capture the textures and rhythms of urban life, delighting with visual coincidences and tactile details. Their sense of quiet discovery - and the color film on which they were shot - allude to the region's identity as a popular vacation destination. The Italian photographer maps the Apulian territory through the traces left by its inhabitants and visitors, in images suffused with the characteristic light of southern Italy - the bright sun and its eloquent shadows, and the otherworldly aura of neon and streetlights after dark.
