Personal statement by the photographer Salvi DANÉS
"The project stems from the intention of making a humble tribute in a specific area of the city that I know by proximity. I studied in a school near the prison in my teens. The motivation to carry out this work has been to personally treasure the atmosphere and memory through the image and to evoke the sensations that I remembered." (© Salvi DANÉS)
Background information
"The recently closed La Modelo prison and the adjacent Eusebi bar serve as a backdrop to A les 8 al bar Eusebi (engl.: At 8 at bar Eusebi). The book pays tribute to the memory of this area of Barcelona's Eixample district and its people through an atmosphere bathed in rust and suspicion. A plot skillfully suggested by Salvi DANÉS through gestures, ways of looking and details to describe a time without glory." (publisher's note, © Dalpine, 2020)
Content
For the photo volume ' A les 8 al bar Eusebi' by Salvi DANÉS, published by the Spanish independent publishing house, the rather rarely used spiral binding was chosen for design reasons. This allows the double pages to be opened completely and viewed in full length. In addition, a connection to the place photographed is established, because drinks and menus in bars and restaurants are often also designed in a ring binder. Further examples of ring binder design are the volumes of the Spanish photographers Pablo CASINO and Ricardo CASES (see below).
