"The now out-of-print book of photographs 'Ontem' (Portuguese: yesterday) by Portuguese photographer André CEPEDA is the result of several years of work in which he took an interest in the lives of the inhabitants of Porto, photographing landscapes, interiors and portraits. The photographer, who is concerned with poverty and social injustice, immersed himself in the 'islands' of Porto, small self-contained neighborhoods where you can only enter through a door and where people live in families and couples in tiny apartments that they share. There he has succeeded in making contact with these people, who are often hopeless and without encouraging prospects. In these interiors, silence can be heard, giving the images a charged intensity. Couples have told him in long conversations that they survive thanks to the strong bonds of love they have forged with each other. This is perhaps the essence of the photographer's work: to express his ideas through images, through understanding others, the people around him."
