Background Information
At the time of his untimely death in 2009, Larry SULTAN was widely regarded as one of the most influential photographic artists of his time.
"This volume, 'Here and Home' on the work of Larry SULTAN represents the first comprehensive overview of the famed American photographer's oeuvre to accompany a major retrospective.
Content
The catalog volume 'Here and Home' on the work of Larry SULTAN features works from all major series, including:
- 'Evidence' (1977), the conceptual project with Mike MANDEL that pioneered how context and sequence directly influence our interpretation of photographs;
'Pictures from Home' (1982-92), a personal exploration of family and domesticity that challenged larger notions of representation through the use of contemporary images of Larry SULTAN's parents contrasted with film stills from the past.
'The Valley' (1998-2003), a deliberate exploration of the subversion of suburban homes often used as film sets by the porn industry, as well as
'Homeland' (2006-09), his most recent work, in which day laborers pose in evocative California settings that suggest both dislocation and longing.
Also on view are other early collaborative works with Mike MANDEL, selected editorial works from his later career, and texts and interviews with Larry SULTAN explaining his creative process." (freely translated, © Prestel Verlag, 2014)
In addition, the catalog includes illustrated essays by Philip Gefter and Sandra S. Phillips, a selected bibliography, and an exhibition history.
