Background information
"Since it was founded in 2004, 'Sammlung Verbund' has continuously acquired 80 works by Francesca WOODMAN within its thematic focus of the 'Feminist Avant-garde of the 1970s', some of which are being published here for the first time. Francesca WOODMAN uses her body as a medium and actor at the same time and dedicates herself to two genres that are traditionally associated with femininity: the female nude and the 'tableau vivant'.
Content
The present overview on the work by Francesca WOODMAN sets itself apart from the common idea that she would artistically anticipate her early death in her photographs. Rather, a new horizon of interpretation is opened up. Her work will be read for the first time in the context of the photographic 'tableaux vivant'. In addition, their vintages are examined for the first time, as well as their specific positioning of the image within the photo paper. The playful, often surreal and symbolic gestures in the work of Francesca WOODMAN show her curiosity for the female self. Her photographs ask questions, suggest answers and reflect a specific ambivalence about being a woman. All photographs are shown in their original size for the first time."
