Background information
"The posthumous 'discovery' of US photographer Vivian MAIER (1926-2009) made headlines. Today, international exhibitions as well as several photography volumes and documentary films tell the story of the artist who was unseen during her lifetime. However, a scholarly reappraisal of Maier's oeuvre and its reception still represents a major research desideratum. Through its image-oriented focus, this volume breaks new ground in what has been a predominantly genealogical discourse to date.
Content
The present volume, 'Vivian Maier and the Mirrored Gaze. Fotografische Positionen zu Frauenbildern im Selbstporträt' by Nadja Köffler, approaches the images of Vivian MAIER in a werkanalytic way and, as a counter-response to the media mystification of Vivian MAIER as a 'nanny photographer', searches for the feminist tenor and artistic self-understanding in her self-portraits. With a foreword by Martin Sexl and artistic contributions by Federico Italiano, Jessica Krecklo Naidu, and Anna Kus Park." (© transcript verlag, 2019)
