Background information
"A note in the workshop book proves: By March 1914 at the latest, Oskar Barnack had completed the first functioning model of a small camera for 35-mm motion picture film. This was not only the invention of a new camera. The Leica (= Leitz/Camera), which was not introduced until 1925 due to the war, heralded a paradigm shift in photography. The Leica not only made it easier for amateurs, career changers and emancipated women to take photographs. It also provoked a new way of seeing, a faster, dynamic view of the world from new perspectives.
Content
Just in time for the anniversary of the legendary 35mm camera and for the first time in this thematic breadth, this volume, illustrated with some 800 photographs, offers a comprehensive art and cultural history of the Leica from the 1920s to the present day. Essays by international authors deal, among other things, with the technical genesis of the Leica, its influence on modern photojournalism, and, not least, its significance for a wide variety of currents within the photographic avant-garde.Previously unpublished documents from the Leica Camera AG archive round out this multifaceted 100-year cultural history."
