Background information
"For four decades, German photographer F.C. GUNDLACH has staged fashion in his pictures and thus written a piece of fashion history himself - the history of clothing, but also of poses and gestures, props and locations, of ideals of beauty in their change. In addition, he produced sensitive portraits and reportages, photographs in the style of subjective photography, as well as travel shots. According to his self-conception, F.C. GUNDLACH was always a photographer on assignment. Working for high-circulation magazines, he shaped the perception of fashion. Conversely, his works in black and white and color reflect the spirit of their time - from the optimism of the austere postwar years to the Op and Pop aesthetics to the dawning postmodernism. The fact that his pictures can also stand on their own proves their aesthetic rank." (© Steidl Verlag, 2008)
Content
This definitive monograph, 'The Photographic Work' brings together the fashion work by F.C. GUNDLACH for the first time and establishes him as a leading light of the industry. His work presents not only the evolution of clothing, but also the poses, gestures, props and locations, which have defined the changing idea of beauty over decades. Alongside this work, he also created emphatic portraits, reportages and travel photography. He has always considered himself a photographer on assignment, and his work for high-circulation magazines shaped the public’s perception of fashion. Yet his images also captured the spirit of their time, embodying the optimism of the meagre days after the war, through op and pop art to post-modernism.
