Background information
The out-of-print photography book 'SPUD' by Brian GRIFFIN was inspired by a residency in northern France, marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Last year, the British photographer spent three weeks in the French town of Béthune-Bruay, near the Somme battlefield, where there is also a large McCain potato factory, one of the largest potato production facilities in Europe, producing around 1700 tons of frozen chips a day. With the coincidence of 'SPUD', the informal British word for potato, which was also used for British soldiers of low rank in World War I, Brian GRIFFIN explores the relationship between potatoes grown in the ground and soldiers killed in the same place. over 100 years ago."
