Background information
"Based on Helmar LERSKI's outstanding photo series 'Metamorphosis - Transformations through Light' from 1935/36, this magnificent volume, 'Faces - The Power of the Face,' presents portraits from the period of the Weimar Republic. The photographs taken by the photographers of the 1920s and 1930s were able to radically renew portrait photography. While portrait photos traditionally served to portray a person's personality, the photographers of the interwar period saw the face as material that could be staged according to their own ideas. The photographed face is used to negotiate both aesthetic considerations and the political upheavals of the Weimar Republic. Modernist experimentation, the relationship between individual and type, feminist role-playing, and political ideologies collide to expand our understanding of portrait photography."
