"Kontaktabzüge' (engl.: Contact prints) are proofs in black and white or in color - something like the photographer's personal diary.
The DVDs 'Kontaktabzüge' are part of a series of documentaries that examine the images and working methods of the greatest photographers of the present - commented by the photographers themselves. The result is insightful as well as interesting portraits of their respective careers.
We accompany the photographers, for example, when they leaf through the contact sheets in search of the perfect picture or when viewing the prints, where for a moment one can see what the artist once saw through the viewfinder of his camera.
Many of the photographers featured here have rendered outstanding services to modern art - each in their own unique way. "For any photographer who wants to establish himself as an artist, there is an artist who risks turning himself into a photographer", wrote in 1976 the art critic Nancy FOOTE.
The boundary between photographer and artist is flowing with the people presented here. The days when photography was just about documenting - the mere photographing of reality - are long gone, today nobody will doubt the importance of photography for contemporary art." (publisher's note)
