Background information
"In early 1974, on the way back from his trip to America, Joseph BEUYS, Klaus STAECK and Gerhard Steidl were on a Boeing 747 from New York to Düsseldorf. Kalus STAECK and Gerhard Steidl had carefully recorded each stop in videos, photographs and audio recordings - their reliable Sony TC-50 cassette recorder was always in use during the lectures, conferences and workshops. To pass the time while flying, the three of them listened to some of the recordings and Joseph BEUYS was surprised to discover how much he laughed: So why not edit that laughter into a single soundtrack?
Gerhard Steidl entrusted the original tapes to the young sound engineer Siegfried Schäfer, who reduced the background noise and produced a 20-minute version. Joseph BEUYS was thrilled when Gerhard Steidl played him the master tape and wanted to publish it as part of his sound art work Ja, Ja, Ja, Ja, Nee, Nee, Nee, Nee from 1969. But unfortunately the master tape of 'Beuys lacht' was lost and only resurfaced in 2020, 46 years later. Now it's finally available, remastered and digitized by 'Schäfer und Pauler Acoustics', as a long-playing record in a limited edition." (© Steidl, 2021)
