Background information
"From 1977 to 1985, Jim GOLDBERG photographed the wealthy and destitute of San Francisco, creating a visual document that has since become a landmark work. Through the combination of text and photographs, 'Rich and Poor’s mass appeal was instantly recognizable. In 1984 the series was exhibited alongside Robert ADAMS and Joel STERNFELD in the 'Three Americans' exhibition at MoMA, and was published the following year by Random House. Out of print since 1985, Jim GOLDBERG's photo book 'Rich and Poor' has been completely re-designed and expanded by Jim GOLDBERG. Available for the first time in hardcover,
Content
'Rich and Poor' builds upon the classic combination of photographs and handwriting and adds a surplus of vintage material and contemporary photographs that have never been published or exhibited. The photographs in 'Rich and Poor' constitute a shocking and gripping portrait of America during the 1970’s and 1980’s that remains just as relevant today. (.´.) When Jim GOLDBERG created this project, between 1977 and 1984, it was a 'major shift in positioning the text accompanying a picture', explains Anne Wilkes Tucker. After photographing both the wealthy and the destitute in San Francisco, Jim GOLDBERG presented each subject with their own image and asked them to write a response directly onto it.
Additional information
The original photo volume, 'Rich and Poor, has been out of print nearly thirty years, and this beautiful new edition of 'Rich and Poor' has preserved its unfiltered voices while sizing up, improving the printing, and adding previously unpublished portraits—plus an Every Building on the Sunset Strip–style accordion insert of San Francisco streets. 'It strengthens the prior presentation of the photographs, which were already strong,” says Tucker. 'It’s richer: there is more information, more context, more depth.'"
