"For me, gray is actually a color, and I first came up with this position of gray in 1976 in the Berlin-Wedding series. It was a very conscious step to drive the pictures even more extreme into immeasurable gray, so that black and white actually gray is actually a color of differentiation for me, as strange as it sounds. Black and white are two fixed points of view, right and left. And I thought that the world was not clearly defined, but presented in many nuances ." "The photo and catalog volume 'Die Farbe Grau', which was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name with works by Michael SCHMIDT (1945-2014) and Gerhard RICHTER in the Galerie Thomas Zander, Cologne, includes photographs by Michael SCHMIDT from the series' Berlin -Wedding '(1976-1978) and' Waffenruhe '(1985-1987) juxtaposed gray pictures by Gerhard RICHTER from the years 1965 to 1974 and' Spiegel, Grau / Mirror, Gray 'from 1991.
