Personal statement of the photographer Witho WORMS
"The photographic volume 'Cette montagne cest moi' is about me. Literally translated, the book title means 'This mountain that I am'. It was initially an association of image and meaning that led to the theme. The carbon in coal is the same carbon referred to in carbon printing. Carbon printing is a photographic printing process that is great for rendering dark tones.
So for this project I used a variation of carbon printing, a 19th century photographic printing technique. I took a piece of carbon from each mountain I photographed. I then ground this carbon into a pigment, which I used to make photographic paper. I used this paper to print a mountain with the charcoal that came from that mountain. In other words, the object of the photograph, the mountain, has become one with the subject of the photograph, the print itself." (freely translated text, © Witho WORMS)
Background information
The out-of-print photographic volume 'Cette Montagne. C'est moi' is a true 'Revier' book about a coal mining area that stretches from France through Belgium and Germany to Poland. Witho WORMS has documented the slagheaps, the book designer Hans GREMMEN has congenially staged the pictures and lovingly produced the book. A wonderful book object!
