Background information
"With the series 'Sommerherz', Cologne-based photographer Thekla EHLING follows her own children growing up. She documents situations and moods and the viewer finds himself entangled in associations and memories of his own childhood. To what extent those mechanisms of the unconscious are connected to the finding of one's own identity, Thekla EHLING emphatically leaves open.
One notices in the series that the photographer has long internalized the specific premises of family photography; she herself names the two Dutch portrait photographers Hellen VAN MEENE and Rineke DIJKSTRA as references. The series 'Sommerherz' was also shown at the 'Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie' in Arles in 2007." (© Kehrer Verlag, 2008)Content
The color images in Thekla EHLING's photo volume 'Somerherz' often show moments of isolation, in which a young soul seems to gaze almost trance-like into itself. They are empty gazes in which a current event is obviously being compared with what has been experienced so far.
