We see crows in the trees and in groups or prancing in the air. Always in black and white and often silhouetted from afar. Hans BOL cautiously approaches the feathers as if he were one of you; I remember Stephen GILL's photobook 'Pigeons' and its rapprochement. BOL does not come to them so much because they are less about urban birds.
Rather, one can compare the recordings in 'God's Allies' with Pentti SAMMALLAHTI's b/w photos in 'Des Oiseaux' (also available here), although those appear to be sought together over a longer period of time.
"Crows, with their black plumage, their sparkling, bright eyes, and dark, shimmering beaks, belong to the night and to witches, heralds of doom and disaster.
But their playful and unpredictable behaviour has also made them widely symbolic. In ancient times, they were even worshipped. The god Odin was accompanied by two ravens (Hugin and MUNIN), representing 'memory' and 'thought'.
The concept of the crow as a symbol of the two principle faculties of humans is irresistible. You are never alone when crows are present.
Photographer Hans BOL presents a tribute to the crow family, from the smallest jackdaws to the larger rooks and ravens, illustrating a fascination with these mysterious birds." (publisher's note, © Hans BOL, 2018)
