Background information
"On the occasion of the presentation of the 2019 Hasselblad Award to Daido MORIYAMA, this generously illustrated volume is published, paying tribute to the influential, always radical and authentic work of the Japanese photographer. Entitled 'A Diary', the out-of-print volume refers to his daily practiced photographic excursions, which are the basis of a body of work characterized by fragments, repetition, chance and chaos. The scope of his oeuvre is vast, so that one can always discover new images of him, even if some of his photographs have now achieved iconic status. To give a sense of the long-lasting and broad influence his work continues to exert today, the volume includes a thematic overview text by Sandra Phillips as well as shorter personal statements by people who have met and worked with the photographer over the years: Simon Baker, Mark Holborn, Hervé Chandès, Nick Rhodes, and Ishiuchi Miyako." Statements of the jury
"Daido MORIYAMA is one of Japan's most renowned photographers, known for his radical approach to medium and subject. MORIYAMA's images take a highly subjective but authentic approach. His work reflects his vision of city life with its chaos of everyday life and unusual characters, occupying a unique space between illusion and reality. Daido MORIYAMA became the most prominent artist to emerge from the short-lived but fundamentally influential 'Provoke' movement, which played an important role in advancing photography and challenging the nature of the medium. His bold, uncompromising style has helped Japanese photography gain widespread recognition in an international context. The photographer William KLEIN, the writings of Jack Kerouac and James Baldwin, and the experimental theater of Shūji Terayama and Moriyama have inspired subsequent generations of photographers, not only in Japan but also around the world." "Daido MORIYAMA, an iconic figure in Japanese photography revered worldwide for his radical aesthetic, is surely one of the most important and influential photographers in history. The chaotic calm and raw beauty of his classic images convey a universal urban psychology and reveal a deep empathy for the alienation and dislocation common to all post-industrial cities." "Daido MORIYAMA's depiction of life is uncensored and he is not afraid of the ugly or the beautiful. He is truly a groundbreaking photographer and an inspiration to people from many creative fields, not only within the art and photography scene. We are very excited to be working with Daido MORIYAMA and his extensive catalog of images and publications, and hope to convey the richness of his ongoing, obsessive engagement with the world in both our upcoming exhibition and catalog." Content
The out-of-print catalog volume 'A Diary. Hasselblad Award 2019' on the work of Daido MORIYAMA brings together photographs taken from different periods in black-and-white and in color; the editors refrain from giving a precise date. The catalog was designed by the design office BANKERWESSEL, who are also responsible for Kent KLICH's photo volume 'Gaza Works'. Following the photographs, the texts and statements about the collaboration with Daido MORIYAMA are presented on red paper in contrasting colors. A text by MORIYAMA reproduced in English - from Record #38 - concludes the 240+ page volume, which gives the viewer a good overview into the work of the current Hasselblad award winner."
