Background information
"Mike MANDEL and Larry SULTAN's artistic collaboration began in 1973 during their Masters at the San Francisco Art Institute; over the next twelve years they created nineteen collaborative projects. Their bond was strengthened by being in opposition to the post-Beat and Cafe Society era San Francisco art scene. Mike MANDEL and Larry SULTAN's collaborative works from that period include the artist books 'How To Read Music In One Evening' (1974) and 'Evidence' (1977); a series of twelve billboards consisting of hand-painted photographs, silkscreens, oil paintings, and digital prints (1973-1983); the film 'JPL' (1980); and the installation 'Newsroom' (1983). Although both artists also worked on solo projects during these twelve years, they pursued and developed an intense and focused artistic collaboration. Their seminal work 'Evidence' is widely regarded as a 'landmark in photobook history'. Many of the aforementioned works are published here in book form for the first time."
