Background information on the book
"A whole series of impressive pictures by Jürgen SCHADEBERG went down in history. The young photographer went to South Africa in 1950 and worked there for 'Drum', the legendary first magazine for black readers, and later for 'Time Life' and 'stern' 'In the early 1950s he portrayed the young lawyer Mandela and the singer Makeba and the wild nightlife in the dynamic black district of Sophiatown.

The monograph on Jürgen SCHADEBERG begins after the foreword by the editor, Ralf-P. Seippel, with an introductory text by Robert von Lucius; both texts - as well as other texts by Sir Tom Hopkinson (1981), Herbie Yamaguchi (2008) - are given in columns in English, German and French. Then the chapters begin with the black and white works by Jürgen SCHADEBERG from South Africa (the most extensive chapter, 1951-1960), Lesothe, Kalahari, Berlin (1961), Glasgow (1968), London (1964-82), Malaga (1970 ), New York (1979), Botswana (1973), again South Africa (1994-2005). It concludes with a text by his wife, Claudia Schadeberg, as well as a biography and appendix with lists of his exhibitions, photo books and films.
