Background information
"Rineke DIJKSTRA is one of the most important contemporary artists in the field of portrait photography. Her large-scale works address the theme of identity, often capturing the sitters in times of transition or moments of vulnerability. Arranged into series of works by the artist, the photographs are reminiscent of 17th-century Dutch portrait painting in their precision of vision, offering not only intimate portraits of the models, but at the same time providing insight into their respective states of mind. Rineke DIJKSTRA's exploration of the portrait image also extends to the medium of video. Her video studies, created with a fixed camera, produce images with the feel of moving photographs, revolutionizing our understanding of the fluid boundary between moving and still images."
