Background information
"Since their beginnings in the 1960s, the photographic work of Bernd BECHER and Hilla BECHER has not only been the subject of formal-aesthetic discussions and analyses, but has itself become an indispensable part of recent art history. Their approach to the medium of photography, which is oriented towards the vocabulary of the visible and remained systematically true to its subject - industrial architecture - for decades, established a new tradition of documentary photography, as whose initiators and pioneers they are considered today. 'Bernd & Hilla Becher' represents the original English edition of the catalog for the first major posthumous Becher retrospective at New York's Metropolitan Museum.
