Background information
"In the 1950s, CHARGESHEIMER's camera was drawn not only to the streets of Paris and Cologne, but also to the Cologne Zoo. For the artist, a place of tranquility in the midst of an increasingly noisy metropolis. 'Chargesheimer at the Zoo' is a coffee table book celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Cologne Zoo. Photography and Cologne Zoo history in one. Discoveries for fans of the charismatic Cologne photographer CHARGESHEIMER.
Content
In the photo book 'Chargesheimer im Zoo', one sees black-and-white shots of pensive-looking monkeys, of penguins lined up in rows, flamingos standing loosely around, sad bears, melancholy-looking tigers, lurking hippos and, again and again, elephants. CHARGESHEIMER also took aim at the people in the zoo. Here a lonely lady in a fur coat feeding geese, there astonished children in Sunday clothes in front of the barrier, strolling loners on the path. These are photos that tell stories. The volume contains unknown photographs, shown for the first time, from a time when a visit to the zoo was still one of the highlights of the year." (somewhat adapted text, © Greven Verlag, 2010)
