Background information
"In January 1962, still in his early twenties, British photographer David BAILEY fulfilled a dream from his time in Singapore serving with the Royal Air Force: together with model and girlfriend Jean Shrimpton, he embarked on the first of his foreign trips for Vogue. Here, his historic visual breakthrough manifests itself in the energy of these images. The photos shown here were taken just before he met Andy Warhol and a year before his friends, the Rolling Stones, launched their own first transatlantic invasion.Content
In the photo book 'NY JS DB 62' David BAILEY immortalized his reaction to that freedom that allowed him to leave the confines of the studio and photograph spontaneously in the streets. The BAILEY / Shrimpton collaboration set early standards that helped put Britain back on the world map of popular culture. His groundbreaking series in wintry New York with his 35mm camera, acquired shortly before, was something special. They convey a certain innocence, have a charm and freshness that still have an effect today." (freely translated, © Steidl Verlag, 2007)
