About the American photographer Mark STEINMETZ (b.1961, in New York City)
Mark Christopher STEINMETZ is an American photographer, who raised in the Boston suburbs of Cambridge & Newton. Aged 21, he went to study photography at the Yale School of Art in New Haven, Connecticut and left that MFA program after one semester and in mid 1983, moving to Los Angeles in search of the photographer Garry WINOGRAND, whom he befriended. His photo volumes - he published around 20 books - combine portraits (portrait-like but spontaneous) and candid photos of people, animals and still life photos. He works with b/w material, usually medium format, developed and printed in his own darkroom. In 1994 he received a Guggenheim Fellowship.
