About German photographer, Uwe STEINBERG (1942-1983)

Uwe STEINBERG was a German photographer and a founding member of the group 'Jugendfoto Berlin'. His family had moved to the GDR in 1956 after the banning of the KPD in the FRG. His father had been a member of the KPD since the 1920s. In 1959, the 17-year-old began to put his enthusiasm for photography into practice in Dessau, starting in 1961 with an internship at ADN's photo agency. From 1963 to 1965, he trained as a photo reporter. From 1965 to 1969, he studied at the Fachschule für Journalistik in Leipzig. In 1974 followed a photography correspondence course in Leipzig. After that he worked mainly as a photo reporter, among others from 1970 for the 'Neue Berliner Illustrierte' (NBI). However, he photographed not only for the picture service and the newspaper, but also on his own assignment. Even in the NBI, not all areas of everyday life in the GDR could be shown. Uwe STEINBERG understood his photography as an independent artistic medium and was thematically and colorfully very versatile. He died April 4, 1983 as a result of a traffic accident in Budapest.
