Personal statement of photographer Raissa VENABLES.
"Through my large-scale images of interiors, I try to evoke a quasi visceral interpretation of our ordinary environments." (Raïssa VENABLES)
Background information, content
"The color photographs by Raissa VENABLES in the catalog volume for exhibitions in Ulm and Ludwigshafen, among others, only seem to show external spaces. In reality, they are soul spaces that tell of the deeds, dreams, and nightmares of their inhabitants. Without ever showing people, the U.S. photographer follows their traces. To do this, she weaves detailed shots of living rooms, hallways, staircases, elevators, or tents into mysterious photo tableaus on the computer.
In this way, a claustrophobic impression is created in her work 'Double Bedroom' due to the size of the beds in relation to the tininess of the room." (© Hatje Cantz, 2006)
