Background information
Annemarie SCHWARZENBACH (1908-1942) is one of the most dazzling figures in modern Swiss cultural and literary history. The writer, photojournalist and world traveler left behind journalistic publications, literary texts and photographs of great emotional intensity and political urgency. Annemarie SCHWARZENBACH's photographic documentaries of the time between the world wars bear witness to her tremendous visual skills and continue to impress to this day. Her carefully composed images show a keen interest in political upheavals and social issues. And they reflect the tension between highly topical issues: Identity and home, individuality and community, the departure from traditional gender roles and the relationship between nature and culture, tradition and progress.
Content
The photo book 'Aufbruch ohne Ziel' (Awakening without a goal) is the first publication devoted exclusively to Annemarie SCHWARZENBACH's hitherto little known photographic work. Accompanying essays locate her pictures in the history of photography and analyze the relationship between photography and literature. Annemarie SCHWARZENBACH's restless locomotion as a form of existence - both intellectually and geographically - thus manifests itself vividly in this multi-perspective volume.
