Background information, content
In his book of photographs 'Ultima Thule', Danish photographer Henrik SAXGREN portrays the hunting industry in Thule, Greenland, which is dying out for various reasons.
"In history, 'Ultima Thule' stands for a mythical place: the northernmost point before the end of the world. For over 200 years, artists, writers, scientists and adventurers have been drawn to this frontier. Henrik SAXGREN continues this tradition, photographing the lives of what may be the last generation of hunters on the pack ice. Like their ancestors centuries before them, they hunt and kill the large (marine) mammals there. Under physically and psychologically challenging conditions, the Danish photographer created fascinating images for which he even had to conquer his own fear at times: images that tell the viewer about the Arctic, its drama, its myths."
