About the German photographer, Thomas RUFF (b.1958, in Zell)

Thomas RUFF studied photography with Bernd and Hilla BECHER at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1977 to 1985, influenced by Walker EVANS, Eugène ATGET, Karl BLOSSFELDT, Stephen SHORE and William EGGLESTON, among others. In 1999 he received the professorship for photography at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf and led the class for photography there from 2000 to 2006. While still a student, he began his practice of conceptual photography in series; his subjects were interiors, portraits, and views of buildings. These series are followed from 1989 by photographs of the starry sky that are not based on the artist's own photographs. In the years from 1992 to 1995 he produced night photographs, and in 1994 to 1996 stereophotographs. Another series of the 1990s are the 'newspaper photographs'. Since 2003 he has increasingly turned to the alienating effects of digital photography.
