Background information
"The Schlei, this 40-kilometer-long arm of the Baltic Sea, is a unique, particularly valuable ecosystem. At the very western end of the Schlei lies Holm, the traditional district of Schleswig. Already in the Middle Ages, the Holm was a fishing quarter. A good 120 fishermen lived here around 1900, and now there are only five. In a few years, there may no longer be any active professional fishermen in Schleswig and on the Schlei. Against this background, Holger RÜDEL has created a unique photo reportage about the last fishermen of Holm. In the process, he got closer to the fishermen than any other photographer before him on water, on land and from the air.

The result is an informative and at the same time touching illustrated book. With his photographs, he tells of the craft of fishing on the Schlei and the current challenges facing professional fishermen in times of climate change, eutrophication and cormorant infestation. He also introduces individual personalities from Holm, such as the historic fisherman Jörg Nadler, and shows what threatens to disappear should professional fishing on the Schlei actually face its demise. With a foreword by Jan Philipp Albrecht (Schleswig-Holstein Minister of the Environment and Fisheries); published by Sparkassenstiftung Schleswig-Holstein." (© Wachholtz, 2021)
