About Bulgarian photographer Eugenia MAXIMOVA

    Eugenia MAXIMOVA is a multiple award winning photographer, photojournalist and visual artist, based in Vienna. She holds a master's degree in journalism- and communication studies from The University of Vienna. Her artistic practice is informed by a critical reflection on and an engagement with socio-political contexts. Inspired by her childhood in Bulgaria, she explores issues of identity and the everyday life in post-communist cultures, but also of consumption and transience. Eugenia uses an analogue medium-format camera and kindles a passion for colours and clear image compositions while making sure to celebrate life. Her work has been shown in solo exhibitions in a large number of countries. As freelance photographer, her list of clients includes: GEO, National Geographic, Economist, Die Zeit, Moscow News, The Guardian, The Washington Post, Corriere della Sera and many more. She has also given talks and has taught several workshops on photography. ​She has published several books and was featured among the 100 best photobooks in 'How We See: Photobooks By Women' (2018).

    With 'Silent River', Eugenia MAXIMOVA addresses the silence surrounding the journalist Victoria Marinova, who was brutally murdered in 2018. Her violent death throws a harsh spotlight on widespread corruption and unsafe working conditions for journalists.
