About the photo artist Lothar BAUMGARTEN (1944-2018).

Lothar BAUMGARTEN studied at the Staatliche Akademie für bildende Künste Karlsruhe (1968) and from 1961 to 1971 at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, among others as a student of Joseph BEUYS, whose anthroposophical ideas also influenced his work. In 1978/79 he spent eighteen months with two Yanomami tribes in the Venezuelan-Brazilian border region. He presented sound and video recordings as well as drawings, paintings and photographic works from this time in 2011/12 at the Museum Folkwang in the six-month exhibition 'Evening of Time - Señores Naturales Yanomami'. His artistic activity was characterized by installations and situational artistic works. From 1994 to 2010 he was a professor at the University of the Arts in Berlin.
Lothar BAUMGARTEN lived and worked in Berlin and New York City. The ethnographic collection he assembled, including documentation, became the property of the Folkwang Foundation as a donation.
