About the Swedish photographer, Gunnar SMOLIANSKY (1933-2019)

Gunnar SMOLIANSKY began to take photographs in 1951 and at the same time discovered the mysteries of the darkroom; from 1954 he worked as an assistant and from 1956 independently as an industrial photographer. Through the studio in the same house began in 1956 the collaboration with Christer STRÖMHOLM. From 1965 he worked as a freelancer for various clients and in parallel devoted himself to his own projects. In 1975 he founded the picture agency 'Bildhuset' with colleagues; since 1978 he had a close friendship with fellow artists Björn DAWIDSSON and Gerry JOHANSSON. He had his first solo exhibition in Upsala in 1971; the first retrospective was held in 2008. On December 12, 2019, Gunnar SMOLIANSKY passed away in Boo, Sweden, at the age of 86.

In 'Signs and Traces', Swedish photographer Gunnar SMOLIANSKY has captured the little things in life. They are black-and-white shots of things that most people carelessly pass by. Traces of people, without the people themselves appearing in the pictures.

The out-of-print volume 'One picture at a Time. Photographs 1952 - 2008' accompanied the retrospective of the work of Gunnar SMOLIANSKY, who became the leading voice in Swedish photography thanks to his idiosyncratic style and quiet attention to detail.

The tree studies in this out-of-print photo volume, 'Trad' by Gunnar SMOLIANSKY, are social journalism in photographic form where people have left the scenery. The footage of fallen trees, however, is too vulnerable to please avid conservationists.
