Background information
"'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' not only gives a great overview of the development of photo books in Sweden on more than 300 canvas-bound pages, but also reflects the development of the international photo book market, which is a very informative, multi-faded textbook Part of the scientific project 'Photography in Print & Circulation', organized by the Hasselblad Foundation in collaboration with the Valand Academy.'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' is the first survey and study of the
history of photobooks in Sweden - from the earliest examples from 1860s
with glued in albumin prints to the contemporary photobook that expand
the idea of what a book can be. 'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' has a
unique perspective since it focuses on the practitioners engaged in the
photobook, and together create the scene of photobooks. Ten of the most
influential photographers, publishers, designers, collectors,
librarians, writers and booksellers in Sweden are interviewed about
their work and views on the photobook. The interviews show that the
photobook culture is a truly international phenomenon. The books in
'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' are grouped in three different themes
that are crucial for photography and reflect the content of the books:
Society, Ego and Image. The historical background and development of the
photobook culture in Sweden is the target of the introductory essay.
'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' is part of a research project by
Hasselblad Foundation and Valand Academy at University of Gothenburg

Content
Based on the history of the photo book in Sweden with many illustrations and exciting footnotes, the first main section, which makes up half of the book, follows: interviews with photographers (Anders PETERSEN), designers (Greger Ulf NILSSON), publishers (Klara KÄLLSTRÖM & Thobias FÄLDT), collectors, booksellers and librarians explain the multi-faceted motives for their engagement with the photo book. The second, weighty main part of 'Published' is a series of pictures arranged in three chapters with practical examples of Swedish photobooks from the years 1947 to today. Implementation of an idea in the photo book is examined here under three aspects - 'Ego', 'Image' and 'Society'. After a brief introduction, which connects the selected photo books, some illustrations with cover and insides follow. The biographic details of each photobook reproduced below the images for further research. The final compulsory index is suitable for both targeted searching and browsing reading. All texts in 'Published: Photobooks in Sweden' are written in a very understandable English.
Additional information / Book Design
Remarkable and of high quality is the book design, which is the responsibility of the Swedish book designer Greger Ulf NILSSON.
Theory and practice form a creative harmony, if e.g. Mikael OLSSON's photos reproduced on all sides, artistically documenting the printing process, enclose the texts. Also the 90% comprehensive book, which can be turned into a large poster, is part of the congenial project idea cast in book form. A perfect print is just 'the icing on the cake' - highly recommended to buy!" (© Richard G. SPORLEDER)
