About the Austrian-German Dadaist and Photographic Artist, Raoul HAUSMANN (1886-1971)

From 1908 to 1911 Raoul HAUSMANN completed his artistic training in the Study Studios for Painting and Sculpture in Berlin, led by Arthur Lewin-Funcke. From 1912 he turned away from academism and produced his first Expressionist lithographs and woodcuts, inspired by his acquaintance with the painters of the Brücke and the reception of the Futurists in exhibitions of the Berlin gallery 'Der Sturm'. In 1915 Hausmann began a love affair with the artist Hannah HÖCH. Together with her, he is considered a pioneer of photo collage; he had turned to this new technique during the First World War. In 1918, together with Richard Huelsenbeck, Johannes Baader and others, he founded the Berlin Club Dada and became an important member of the Dada movement in Berlin. From June 30 to August 25, 1920, together with George Grosz and John HEARTFIELD, he organized the First International Dada Fair in Berlin, at the same time the high point and last major public appearance of the Berlin Dada group. From 1927 he devoted himself primarily to photography. After the Second World War, Hausmann again sought contact with László MOHOLY-NAGY. Between 1946 and 1959 he expanded his photographic work with cameraless experiments (photopictograms) and returned to photomontage.
