About the U.S. photographer, Susan MEISELAS (b. 1948, in Baltimore)

Susan MEISELAS studied at Sarah Lawrence College and received her master's degree in education from Harvard University. Through the mediation of Gilles PERESS, she became a member of the Magnum photography agency in 1976, was named a MacArthur Fellow in 1992, and has been chairwoman of the Magnum Foundation since 2007. Susan MEISELAS has lived in New York since the 1970s. The freelance photographer became internationally known for her coverage of the revolution in Nicaragua (1978-1982). Her motive is to make visible themes and backgrounds on human rights issues as well as armed conflicts.

Susan MEISELAS has received numerous awards, including the Robert Capa Gold Medal (1979), the Leica Award for Excellence (1982), the Hasselblad Award (1994), the Harvard Arts Medal (2011), and the Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation Award (2019), as well as the first Women in Motion Award (2019) for her lifetime achievement. Most recently, she received the prestigious Dr. Erich Salomon Award from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Photographie (DGPh) in 2022.
