About the Russian photographer and designer, Alexey BRODOVITCH (1898-1971).

"Alexey BRODOVITCH was a U.S. graphic designer of Russian origin who emigrated from Soviet Russia to Paris in 1920, where he designed stage sets for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, among others. Trained as a book designer, he produced layouts for Arts et Metiers Graphics and Cahiers d'Art and worked as a poster and exhibition designer from 1926 to 1930.
In 1930 he moved to the U.S., first to Philadelphia, where he established a class in advertising design at the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art. In 1934 he moved to New York. There he worked as art director at the fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar until 1958. Under his aegis, he formed the specific style of this magazine, a razor-sharp typography that leaves a lot of open space, in combination with European art and photography, among others by Martin MUNKASCI, MAN RAY, Henri CARTIER-BRESSON, A. M. CASSANDRE, Salvador DALí, Herbert BAYER and later Richard AVEDON - a revolution in magazine design.
In 1941 Alexey BRODOVITCH set up a 'design laboratory' at the New School for Social Research, where he taught Louis FAURER, Lillian BASSMAN, Irving PENN and Richard AVEDON, among others.
In 1966 he had to end his teaching career due to illness; he returned to France the following year, where he died in 1971 in Le Thor, southern France. In 1972 Alexey BRODOVITCH was inducted into the Art Directors Club Hall of Fame." (slightly modified text, original: © wikipedia)
