Background information, content
"To this day, French photographer Jacques Henri LARTIGUE is known primarily for his black-and-white photographs - with exhibitions in over seventy countries around the globe. But when he was discovered by the world public at the age of 69 thanks to a solo show at New York's MoMA - the year was 1963 - he already looked back on a rich color oeuvre.
Already in the first decades of the 20th century, the son of an upper-middle-class family had explored the possibilities of early color photography with the costly autochrome technique. He returned to it enthusiastically when color film made the process easier at the end of the 1940s.

The out-of-print photo volume 'Das Leben ist bunt' (Life is Colorful) shows that the French photographer Jacques Henri LARTIGUE comes unmistakably from painting; in his pictures he celebrates life: Whether colorful flower meadows, sophisticated events with the Kennedys or Pablo Picasso on the Côte d'Azur, whether a picnic in the snow or a still life in the mountains of autumnal Piedmont - the lightness of being always jumps over to the viewer and takes him into the colorful vintage world of the artist.
In addition, the curators Martine d'Astier and Martine Ravache prove in their profound evaluations of his diaries and albums why it was long overdue to discover the color photography of a Henri LARTIGUE." (© Schirmer / Mosel, 2016)
