Background information
"The profound photographic oeuvre of South African photographer David GOLDBLATT was discovered late by the international art scene, with Okwui Enwezor making a significant contribution: At the latest since the South African's participation in Documenta11, curated by Enwezor, GOLDBLATT's valuable work has received the attention it deserves. His sensitively observed photographs have symbolic content and always tell stories, some of which the uninitiated understand only after looking at the picture description. The photos tell of life in the Cape, under the apartheid regime and after; they tell of exclusion, of disadvantage, of poverty, of violence." (© Hatje Cantz)
