About the German photographer, Stefan MOSES (1928-2018)

Stefan MOSES had to leave school in 1943 because of his Jewish background and survived a forced labor camp. After training as a photographer in Breslau shortly after the end of World War II, he worked as a theater photographer at the National Theater in Weimar. From 1950 he lived in Munich, where he first became known for his reportages for Stern magazine. His documentary portraits of people and professions in West Germany ('Deutsche') and later in East Germany ('Abschied und Anfang') made him accessible to a large audience. He took people out of their working environment and photographed them in front of a gray linen cloth - thus creating contemporary documents. Stefan MOSES received several awards: in 1990 he was awarded the David Octavius Hill Medal, in 1991 the Cultural Honorary Award of the City of Munich. He has been a member of the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich since 1994. In 2001 he received the Honorary Award of the Stankowski Foundation, in 2004 the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (I. Class) and in 2014 the Lovis Corinth Prize.
