Background information
"Architecture of Homelessness - Guest at the Pinakothek der Moderne' is an exhibition catalog; exhibition and publication are the result of an invitation by the Munich street magazine BISS to the photographers Boris MIKHAILOV, Ulrike MYRZIK/Manfred JARISCH, Dayanita SINGH, Wolfgang TILLMANS, John VINK and Wolfgang BELLWINKEL to work on the problem of the homeless, because homelessness has been a worldwide problem of modern societies for many years. More and more, the houseless and homeless people also characterize the image of our cities, but the perception of this problem varies from person to person. Some are shocked, others disgusted, some react confused and most indifferent, but rarely is the treatment of the homeless respectful.
The arts have rarely addressed this problem; inhibitions and fears are too great. The lack of outlets for such socially critical art and the danger of accusations of whitewashing or a lack of aesthetics are certainly also partly to blame for this situation.
Contents
This publication, 'Architecture of Homelessness - Guest at the Pinakothek der Moderne', shows the works of seven internationally renowned photographers - Boris MIKHAILOV, Ulrike MYRZIK/Manfred JARISCH, Dayanita SINGH, Wolfgang TILLMANS, John VINK and Wolfgang BELLWINKEL - who, despite all obstacles, have ventured into this uncertain terrain and what artistic positions they take on the subject of homelessness. Both - exhibition & publication - show not only the social misery and poverty, but also the creativity and improvisation skills developed by homeless people to survive in their situation.
