About the American Magnum photographer, Steve McCURRY (b. 1950, in Philadelphia)

Steve McCURRY was born in Philadelphia and has been one of the most visually powerful representatives of contemporary photography for over 40 years. He gained international fame for his documentation of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan. For this reportage he was awarded the Robert Capa Gold Medal in 1980. In 1986 he became a member of the Magnum photography agency. McCurry has received many awards. He won four first prizes in four disciplines in the Press Photo of the Year competition in 1985 and two first prizes in 1992. He has been named Photographer of the Year several times and has been an honorary member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain since 2005. His photographs have appeared on the covers of many magazines and publications, in over a dozen books and in countless exhibitions worldwide. Steve McCURRY has reported from numerous wars around the world, including the Iran-Iraq War, the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, Beirut, Cambodia, Tibet, Yemen, the Philippines and the Gulf War. Again and again he returns to Afghanistan. After traveling extensively throughout India, the Middle East and Afghanistan, he founded ImagineAsia in 2004 with the goal of providing educational opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.

Additional information

His most famous photograph is that of the 'Afghan Girl' with the intense green eyes; the portrait was taken in 1984 in the Nasir Bagh refugee camp. The striking impact of this photo is so enormous that it made the cover of National Geographic in June 1985 and has been printed countless times since. His images have been exhibited at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (Hamburg), Palazzo della Penna (Perugia), Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and many other galleries and museums.
