Mary Ellen MARK was born in Philadelphia in 1940 and died in New York City in 2014. She had been a full member of the MAGNUM photo agency since 1977 and, after her death, is one of the most important representatives of social documentary photojournalism.

Mary Ellen MARK (born in Philadelphia, died in New York City) is one of the most important representatives of social documentary photojournalism. After studying art history, she did her bachelor's degree in photojournalism. Since 1976 she has been a full member of the photography agency Magnum Photos and has worked for the most important magazines such as Life, New York Times, The New Yorker, Rolling Stone, Vogue and other magazines. Her over forty international awards include: two honorary doctorates, the Cornell Capa Award, the Infinity Award, a Hasselblad Foundation Grant and the World Press Award. She should be mentioned in the same breath as socially critical photographers such as Dorothea LANGE, Walker EVANS or W. Eugene SMITH. Her art of making portraits of people of all origins found its way into a good two dozen photo books by and about the photographer. Mary Ellen MARK died 2015 in New York City.
