Background information
"This photo volume, 'The Moth' by Jem SOUTHAM, has its origins in a black-and-white photograph taken by the British photographer in about 1983: a lone man standing on the beach at Gwithian in St. Ives, Cornwall.
Content
From that singular, meditative moment, the book unfolds like a succession of memories drifting back and forth through time. Over the course of 30 years, Jem SOUTHAM returns to west Cornwall to explore a place rich in maritime and mining history, as well as evidence of Celtic mythology. The poetic sequence of images, inspired by the alliterative verse of the old English poems 'The Wanderer and The Seafarer', moves from meadow vistas to streams of water, forgotten houses and farm dogs waiting for their meal. Every now and then, Jem SOUTHAM's stream of images is interrupted by a sublime moment of rural landscape, dwarfed only by the hazy memory of 'The Moth'." (freely translated, © Mack Books, 2018)
