Background information

"The great humanitarian and political issue of our time is migration and with his latest video work, Irish artist Richard MOSSE has created a sharp, haunting and unique artwork; a film projected across three eight meter wide screens accompanied by a loud dissonant soundtrack to create an overwhelming, immersive experience. On foot in the midst of a raging battle in Syria, in a US plane strafing Daesh positions on the ground, to a scene where pathologists extract DNA from the bones of unidentified corpses to drowning refugees near the Aegean island of Leros - the film gives space to testimonies of historical events, conveyed through advanced weaponry and camera technology.
Documentation of the journeys of refugees and migrants across the Middle East, North Africa and Europe are captured using an extremely powerful thermal camera that is not generally available to the public.
This super-tele-military camera can sense human bodies over fifty kilometers away day or night and read the biological trace of human life. The camera translates the world into a heat signature of apparent temperature difference, creating a blinding monochrome halogen image that literally and metaphorically alludes to hypothermia, climate change, gun targeting, border surveillance, xenophobia and the 'naked lives' of the stateless.
