Background information
"Teshima is one of the 28 islands of the Shiwaku archipelago in Japan. The island was once famous for its naval power; the shipbuilding and navigational skills of its inhabitants were highly valued and played an important role in maritime trade. Today, Teshima has only about a dozen inhabitants. The terraced fields that once covered the hillsides have been swallowed up by bamboo forests, along with the stone walls that still stand. The island's last fisherman died late last year; to this day, his fishing boat lies moored in the harbor, rocking on the waves. Listening to the silent sleep of this island, without disturbing it, makes us aware of Japan's present situation as an island nation." (© Kehrer Verlag, 2022)
